Brezeli

These traditional Swiss cookies are made with a Brezeli iron, which can be found at Swiss specialty stores.

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 packet vanilla sugar, or 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar (if you don't have vanilla sugar, use regular sugar and add a teaspoon of vanilla extract with the cream)
pinch salt
1 large egg
7 tablespoons heavy cream
3-3/4 cup all-purpose flour

Cream butter. Mix in sugar, vanilla, salt, egg and cream. Fold in flour working the dough as little as possible. Chill overnight. Roll dough on floured board very thin. Cut circles slightly smaller than design on Brezeli iron and bake until golden brown.
